Learn how one company has built this organization over the past 6 years to bring resources together to build an employee network, promote the value of project management, assist those seeking certification, and actively participate in their local PMI chapter - so you can build your own.

Manager 3, Program Control, Newport News Shipbuilding, A Division of HII

6 years ago, Asley Cadwallader started a volunteer organization at work called the Project Management Shipbuilders Association - PMSA - with no funding, just volunteers, and senior leadership support. Today, the community reaches over thousands of shipbuilders in Newport News, VA at Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries, to promote project management and PMI certifications. She will share their community of practice's story - from initial concept through years of evolution, development, to the strong organization it stands as today; how their goal is to provide their members with the skills, resources, and support needed to excel in the industry; and how their organization serves as a forum for networking and collaboration, helping to promote industry best practices, and build a strong community of successful shipbuilders. During the session, she will discuss candid stories about what worked and what didn't, how to create the proposal & value propositions for senior leadership, implementing & recruiting a leadership team, and much more. The participants will also understand how they have established a robust PMP Study and Development program utilizing their certified employees to lead the way and conduct study groups (in the past 6 months, they have gotten over 60 employees certified). She will also discuss how senior leadership utilizes them as a "consultant" type role when discussing project management training and best practices. My plan is to use minimal/less wordy PowerPoint slides to communicate message/share templates with - and have more of a candid discussion with the participants to articulate the information. She would also like to bring artifacts for the participants to take with them (or a way to get said artifact to them electronically).
